5 Organizations Supporting and Empowering LGBTQ+ Tech Workers

Technology cannot progress without adequate diversity and representation across the workforce that designs and develops it. Although the tech industry has made some strides in the effort to establish broader diversity and inclusion, there is still a lot of progress to be made, particularly for LGBTQ+ workers.

Despite the growing number and visibility of LGBTQ+ people in the tech industry, many still face discrimination at work, leading to feelings of discomfort, concerns about safety, and in some cases, a higher risk of depression and anxiety. Without a true sense of safety and community at work, LGBTQ+ employees may face difficulty excelling in their roles and building meaningful relationships with coworkers, and companies may miss out on talent.

In honor of Pride Month, we looked into some organizations offering resources, community, and support for underrepresented trans, queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and gender-nonconforming IT workers, helping empower them in their jobs and lives in general.

1. LGBTQ in Technology Slack – The LGBTQ in Technology Slack group offers a moderated space for LGBTQ+ people in technology to chat with and support each other. 5. #love_wins Slack channel at Gorilla Logic – The #love_wins Slack channel at Gorilla Logic is a safe space for all of our employees to share articles and events, plan meetings and get-togethers, and further support our efforts to create a safe and inclusive work environment at Gorilla Logic, and in the larger tech industry. The channel is open to all employees, whether they identify as LGBTQ+ or are an ally.

Companies that aim to develop products and services to serve the diverse consumer base must first look inward and ensure that their own workforce reflects that diversity. Beyond hiring LGBTQ+ employees, companies also need to make sure they are fostering a culture that encourages everyone to be themselves and feel safe doing so.
